EARLY LIFE:

Jalal  ad-din  Muhammad  Rumi  was  also  known  as  jalal  ad-din  Muhammad  Balkhi. He  was  born  in
30, September 1207  and  was  a  13th century  Persian poet,  Islamic  scholar  and  Sufi.  Muslims  of  south  Asia appreciated  his  spiritual  legacy.  His  poems  were translated  into  a  lot  of  languages. Rumi  is  the  “best  selling  poet”  in  United  States.  Rumi’s  work  is  in  Persian  mostly  but  some  time  he  used  Turkish,  Arabic  and  Greek.  His  Masnavi  is  one  the  best  poem of  Persian  world.

 

WORK:

Rumi’s  work  is  normally  divided  into  different categories:
the  quatrains  (Rubayat)  and  odes  (ghazals)  of  “Divan”,  the  six  books  of  the  “Masnavi”.

POETIC WORK:

  • Ruimi’s major work is  Masnavi, a six volume poem regarded by a lot of poets as the Persian language Quran.It contains approximately 27,000 lines of Persian poetry.

 

  • Rumi’s other  work  is  the  “Diwan e kabir”   or “Diwan-e Shams-e Tabrizi”,  named  in  honour  of Rumi’s  master  ‘Shams’.  Diwan  contains  35,000 Persian  couplets,  2,000  persians  quatrains,  90 ghazals  and  19  quatrains.

 

EIGHT HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS:

In  Afghanistan  Rumi  is  known  as  Mawlana,  in  Turki  as  Mevlana  and  in  Iran  as  Molavi. In  2007 the  eight  hundredth  anniversary  was  celebrated by  “UNESCO”  on  the  proposal  of  Afghanistan, Iran  and  turkey  delegations.  A  medal  with  the name  of  Rumi  was  issued  to  those  who  are engaged  in  research  on  Rumi’s  ideas.  A  grand conference  of  writers,  intellectuals  and  diplomats were  organised  in  Kabul  and  Balkh,  the  Rumni’s birth  place.  On  the  other  hand  in  Iran
(30 September 2007)  the  school  bells  were  rung throughout  the  country  in  the  honor  of  Rumi. Also  in  that  year  Iran  held  the  “Rumi  week”  from  26 October  to  02 November.  An International  conference  were  organised  in  Tehran  which  was  opened  by  president  of  Iran and  chairman  of  Iranian  parliament.  Scholars  from  twenty  nine  countries   attended  the  events,  and  450  articles  were  presented  at  the conference.  UNESCO  announced  2007 “INTERNATIONAL   RUMI  YEAR”.

 

DEATH:

     Rumi  was  died  in  1273 AD.  He  was  burried  in Konya  and  his  shrine  became  a  sacred  place.
